Alclutha Galloways started in 2007 when John and Ruth Berridge decided to specialise in Galloway cattle rather than continue to fatten white face steers and run ewes on their 47 hectare property in Dairy Flat just north of Auckland. After considering various breeds, and then seeing Galloway cattle at the Field days at Mystery Creek, they choose them.
From their research they were aware of the small number of pure bred and registered Standard (or black) Galloway cattle. Having seen them here and in Scotland they were very taken with them, and decided on them. The original intent was to develop a small herd of Standard Galloways and improve the numbers of these cattle.
That proved easier said than done, and so whilst continuing to look for Standard Galloways they decided to start with some White Galloway cattle. Their first white Galloway heifers were purchased from Lorraine Clifford's Lifestyle stud in Levin in mid 2007, and they later added a white bull and two more heifers.
In early 2008 they took up an opportunity to purchase a number of Standard Galloway cows, heifers and calves, as well as two bulls from Tim Birdsall's and Linda Peat's Tullamore Galloways. The older animals had previously been part of the Colvend herd.
A further purchase of white heifers from Jill Naysmith's Whispering stud in Maungataroto followed.
Today John and Ruth have the two separate studs - Alclutha White Galloways, and Glenfinnan Standard Galloways.
They intend to further develop each of these studs, and diversify with new bloodlines from both NZ and overseas.
Subject to availability they are offering for sale both White and Standard pure bred Galloway cattle. Most are for sale as pure bred and registered with the Galloway Cattle Society of New Zealand.
John and Ruth are members of the Galloway Cattle Society of New Zealand. They invite enquires from anyone interested in White or Standard Galloway cattle. |
